Around 50 automobiles have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the German town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Vehicles, building surfaces and postboxes were defaced, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they stated in a statement.
Officers state they were alerted late on Wednesday night, when a man noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored liquid.
The liquid had been placed in the shape of a banned symbol, they reported.
Police then found many other marked cars and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under laws banning the public display of Nazi symbols.
Law enforcement report initial examinations suggest the liquid was likely human blood.
"Currently there is no lead as to where it came from; authorities are currently not cognizant of any harm in connection with the occurrence," they added.
City officials stated they were working "to unravel the incident" and have appealed to the residents for information.
A high-ranking representative stated the incident made him speechless and had to be addressed promptly.
"This event strikes at the very heart of Hanau and revives the trauma of the far-right terrorist attack five years ago," he stated on online, recalling the murder of nine individuals by a shooter aiming at residents of foreign heritage in five years prior.
